Review of Sony Online Entertainment SOE games & customer service
62
I would give SOE Sony Online Entertainment a grade of D.
I played everquest 2 for around six months and had the displeasure of dealing with sony's customer support as well as learning how they operate.
One thing that I disliked about SOE was their downtimes. It seemed like they would pick the worst times to take their servers down for maintenance. They would wait till 10am eastern time and take servers down for an hour or 2, an average of 3-4x a week quite regularly. With all the money people are playing games you would think they could pay someone to do this in the wee hours of the morning or put it on a sliding scale to change things up. It got old fast always not being able to play during my normal play times.
Another issue I had with SOE was when I got banned once. I had a friend that purchased some plat from farmers and he gave me like 20 plat each time he got some. Well apparently I got banned for purchasing plat froma 3rd part, which was not the case. Apparently they have plenty of ingame GMs walking around with the banstick. After many phone calls, with individuals who want to pass the buck, filling out contact forms, and 2-3 weeks of waiting I finally got unbanned. They have no lack of individuals who will lock you out of the game, but it was impossible to talk to someone to help rectify an unjust banning. Yes I know my friend buying plat might not be within the rules, but he should of been punished, not me for recieving. I was able to prove I didn't buy it by showing that he logged onto the game via my computer / IP address before.
SOE could also do something to speed the downloading of their games up. If all else allow it to be mirrored at alternate places. They have the download capped at a silly low speed and it has taken me around 12 hours before on a decent connection.
Another issue that I have with Sony Online Entertainment is that they really dropped the ball when switching to live gamer. This is basically a system where players on certain servers can buy and sell items and characters. Long story short is they had a functional system and switched to a broken system. In closing, it is unlikely that I will go back to an SOE game in the future. I have dealt with online game companies that operate much more smoothly. The games might have nice graphics and be somewhat fun, but they way a company operates can really ruin an mmorpg.
