How to make money from nature

So you like nature and want to make some extra money while enjoying nature. There are quite a few things that can be done to make a little bit of extra cash. Granted this is not going to make you rich but can help you make a few extra dollars.

You can go out and dig roots. There are many different types of roots that can be dug and some actually pay quite a bit. Roots such as goldenseal and ginseng are two of the most popular that come to mind. Be aware that root digging and cleaning can be quite hard work. Goldenseal might only be about $30 a pound while ginseng should be many hundreds of dollars per pound.

You can gather different nuts like walnut or acorns. These can be sold to people that either use them for their own purposes or to feed the wild life. You can even gather pine cones that can be sold for their smell or decorative purposes.

You can also gather feathers from different birds that were left behind. Or find empty turtle shells that have been left behind by turtles. How about picking some wild berries such as blackberries, that can be sold for different foods.

You can even make a bit of extra money if you find a unique peice of wood that would make a nice looking walking stick. Don't forget about rocks and minerals, there are a variety of rocks that people will pay for. If you are really lucky you can find a meteorite that can be worth something.

One ultimate way of making money from nature would be to setup a renewable fuel source such as solar panels, wind power, or even hydro electric. You can actually put energy back into the grid and the power company can actually pay you in some locations.

I will refrain myself from promoting income from trapping or hunting live animals. This could be done as well, but can have a negative impact on mother nature.

Good tips. Warning on the bird feathers. There might still be a law against eagle feathers. I was always warned to leave them alone or face a huge fine.

interesting, I had no idea on eagle feathers. Personally I Would almost contest that one, as long as it was just a couple of feathers and not a whole bird. We don't have enough eagles around here to where that will be an issue I figure. We have a ton of hawks an crows though.

The best story I ever heard about making money from nature was a woman that lives near the desert. She set up a website selling tumbleweeds as a joke. But sales took off. Various movie production companies order tons of them. She quit her regular job and now just steps outside gets them and ships them out.
