How to change an automobiles oil.
62First make sure that your automobile has had a chance to cool down as you want to minimize your risk of getting burned. If your vehicle does not sit up high where you can easily get underneath it you will need some automobile ramps to pull up on. Find a nice flat spot, put your car in park, and engage the emergency brake. Go ahead and put some blocks in front and behind the tires, so that your vehicle does not roll on top of you.
You should be able to get all necessary supplies for doing your own oil change at a place like walmart. You should be able to reference your owners manual for details such as oil type and where the oil drain plug is. First put your oil catching container below the oil drain bolt. Take the proper sized wrench and remove the bolt, being careful not to make a mess.
Let the oil drain into the oil catching container. Once it is done draining carefully clean the bolt and its contact surface. Then replace it be sure not to over or under tighten as this can cause issues. If unsure you may need to use a torque wrench.
Now move your oil catching container and remove the oil filter with a filter removal tool. Remember, counterclockwise should remove it. Let the extra oil drain into the container and lay the filter on it. Once it has drained carefully clean any surface dirt where the filter contacts. Go ahead and prime the rubber seal around the lip of the filter and the filter itself. Do this by filling the filter with oil about 3/4 of the way and rubbing some oil on the rubber seal. Now carefully screw the filter back on hand tight. Use the filter tool and go just a little tighter than that as you don't want to over tighten your filter.
Now that you have your filter and your oil drain bolt back on. It is time to add the oil. Once you have the right type and amount of oil, grab a funnel and add the oil at the proper place under the hood. Be careful not to put too much oil in your car as that can cause problems.
Once you have done these steps start your car for about 5-10 seconds without revving it, then shut it off. If you are on ramps you can roll it so it is flat. Use your oil dipstick and make sure your oil level is at the proper level. Add if necessary. The reason you start the automobile was to move some of that oil around so that you could get a proper reading.
Find a way to properly dispose of your oil, don't just poor it on the ground as it is toxic. Some place may even buy or take your used motor oil for free, so they can reprocess it. Your car should be good for at least another couple thousand miles or few months!
* your automobile will be more reliable and last longer with proper maintenance and oil changing. * used oil can be toxic so wear gloves and clean any oil off of your skin immediately after changing it. * be careful not to change oil when the oil is hot from the car.
